We all need a place to share freely, hear ourselves, feel heard, and work toward greater understanding and problem-solving. Seeing a skilled therapist, someone who can ask the questions to help untangle overwhelming emotions or contradictory thoughts, impulses, and times of confusion can lead to improvements in quality of life. Sometimes people call at the point of crisis, and sometimes people reach out when they realize they are falling into long-standing painful patterns. At times 2 or 3 sessions can feel like enough, and sometimes people come for many weeks in a row. There is no right or wrong way. Feeling a connection to the therapist is a vital part of the therapeutic process, and this can take some time, especially if trusting others is a challenge.
Starting therapy can feel daunting. It can be very hard to take the first step- many people feel the need, then hesitate to make the call- problems seem to dissipate- then tensions rise again. Taking the first step takes courage.
